Our Goal
The goal for Place of Hope Africa is to provide a stable home with love and security that will help these babies and children through the traumas they have endured in their young lives. When possible, restoring them to their families, usually their mother. If not, prepare them to move on to permanent foster care or families. Teaching babies to learn to bond is an essential part of what we do. Our babies and children come to us through the Department of Social Development (DSD) or by single mothers who have been abused or raped. This allows the mothers to take part in counseling, rehab, finish school, or find a job so they are in a place to take care of their children.
We are the Bjorklunds
We founded Place of Hope Africa in 2008, as a place of safety in Plettenburg Bay in the Western Cape of South Africa. It continues today under a new name and NPO by Celia, our former house mother. In late 2012, our second place of safety, which became a children's home, opened in Albert Falls, KwaZulu Natal. Over the next three years we cared for 20+ babies and children. Having to return to the states for VISAs, the children were placed back with their mothers or put in permanent foster care situations. Currently we are in Hilton, KwaZulu Natal, about 30 km's from Albert Falls, on there other side of Pietermaritzberg. Our location is very near to a very large rural area called Sweetwaters, where there is an extreme need for what we do. Just this year we have also registered as Hope for Future home school. It is through the ACE curriculum used internationally that some of you may be familiar with.
